Movie Ratings 2026: Essential Guide to PG-13, R and TV Labels

Understand U.S. movie ratings and streaming maturity labels, including PG-13, R, NC-17, content descriptors, regional differences and family viewing checks.

Movie ratings describe content and viewing guidance; they do not measure how good a film is. For U.S. films, the MPA uses G, PG, PG-13, R and NC-17, with descriptors explaining the content behind a rating. Streaming services can also show television maturity labels and regional ratings. Read the label and the content description together before deciding whether a title fits your household.

What movie ratings are meant to tell you

The MPA explains that its rating box supplies a letter category and a descriptor tailored to the film. The category is a quick guide; the descriptor identifies elements such as language, violence or other mature content that informed the decision.

A rating should not be read as a review score, a prediction of enjoyment or a universal judgment about every child. Two films with the same category can contain different kinds of material, which is why the explanatory wording matters.

When looking up a film, check the title, year and version. A remake and an older film with the same name can be easy to confuse. A rating associated with one should not be copied onto the other.

Read PG-13, R and NC-17 precisely

PG-13 signals a stronger caution than PG. R and NC-17 have different admission meanings in the U.S. film-rating system. The MPA’s official guide is the source for the category definitions, rather than a simplified claim that every mature rating means adults only.

A cinema may publish its own identification and admission procedures alongside the rating. Check that theater’s current policy if an admission question affects a planned visit. A streaming profile setting does not determine what a cinema will permit at the door.

The practical approach is to read the actual category, the descriptor and the viewing context. Do not assume that changing the place where a film is watched changes what is in the film.

Use movie ratings and content descriptors together

The descriptor helps identify what led to the rating. A household concerned about frightening imagery may ask a different question from one concerned about strong language. The category alone cannot answer both questions in detail.

Imagine two hypothetical PG-13 films. One emphasizes fantasy action, while the other includes sustained distressing themes. The shared category does not make the experience identical. Reading the content description helps distinguish the concerns without needing a spoiler-filled plot summary.

If you want more detail, use a reliable content review that identifies what it assessed. Separate that reviewer’s judgment from the official rating. Both can be useful, but they are different sources with different purposes.

Understand why streaming labels can look different

Netflix explains that maturity ratings can be assigned by the service or a local standards organization and can vary by region. It also provides content advisories where relevant. A screenshot taken in another country may therefore show a different label from your own account.

Television labels such as TV-14 or TV-MA are not simply alternative spellings of every MPA movie category. Read the service’s explanation of the rating displayed rather than inventing a perfect one-to-one conversion.

For a series, Netflix says the details page can reflect the overall or highest maturity level, while a season’s opening display may differ. Check the title and season you intend to watch instead of relying only on a general series poster.

Treat profile controls as a practical tool

A service’s parental or profile controls can help limit the titles available in that profile. Read the current help instructions for the service and account type. This article does not change anyone’s settings or claim that one setting prevents every unwanted viewing experience.

Use the actual viewing profile when checking availability and ratings. An adult profile and a child profile may not show the same catalog. A search result outside the service may also describe a title that is not currently offered in your region.

For shared devices, make sure everyone understands which profile is intended for the viewing session. A carefully configured profile is less useful if a different account or profile is opened by mistake.

A short viewing checklist that respects household differences

Before choosing a title, confirm the exact film or season, read the local rating and descriptor, and consider the audience’s particular sensitivities. If the information is insufficient, look for a more detailed content description before pressing play.

For example, a family planning a weekend film can shortlist two titles and compare the specific advisory language. That process does not require ranking one family’s preferences above another’s. It makes the available information easier to use.

Adults can also use descriptors for their own viewing choices. Ratings are not only about age thresholds; the content explanation helps any viewer decide whether a particular experience suits the moment.

Check again when a title, version, service or region changes. For 2027 viewing, use the current listing and help page rather than assuming a saved screenshot remains definitive. This guide explains how to read the information, not which film every household should choose.

Frequently asked questions

Do movie ratings tell me whether a film is good?

No. They provide content and viewing guidance, not a quality score or a promise that a viewer will enjoy the film.

Is R the same as NC-17?

No. Under the MPA system, R allows an accompanying parent or adult guardian for viewers under 17, while NC-17 admits no one 17 and under.

Why does the same title show another rating abroad?

Streaming ratings can vary by region and local standards. Check the label shown for the actual title and region you will use.

Should I read the descriptor as well as the letter?

Yes. The descriptor explains the content elements behind the category and can answer concerns the letter alone does not.

Can a TV season have different maturity information?

Netflix says season-level information can differ from the overall series rating. Check the relevant season and its advisories.
